The Tension Control Handle – Revolutionizing Dobsonian MountsThe Tension Control Handle is an innovative feature that sets the Sky-Watcher Dobsonian apart from traditional telescopes. The patented tension adjustment system (US Patent No. 6,940,642) allows users to easily fine-tune the friction between the optical tube and the sideboards of the mount. With the simple turn of the tension control knob, you can increase or decrease the tension, ensuring the telescope stays in position without the need for counterweights or complex balancing.
This feature addresses a common challenge faced by Dobsonian telescope users: maintaining the ideal level of friction to hold the optical tube steady. Too much friction makes it hard to move the tube, while too little causes it to drift out of position. The Tension Control Handle solves this by enabling precise tension adjustments. When set correctly, it allows the telescope to stay in position even when accessories like a finderscope or eyepiece are added, without compromising the smoothness of movement required for tracking celestial objects.

Designed with advanced features and built with high-quality materials, this telescope provides sharp, clear, and stable views of celestial objects, making it an excellent option for both beginners and experienced astronomers.
At the heart of this telescope is its 10-inch Pyrex glass primary mirror. Pyrex glass is known for its low coefficient of thermal expansion, meaning it cools down more quickly compared to regular glass, allowing for faster stabilization when moving between different temperature environments. This results in quicker setup times and more reliable image quality, especially for larger telescopes like this one. The paraboloidal primary mirror further reduces spherical aberration, which ensures sharper and more accurate images across the entire field of view.
The 4-arm secondary mirror bracket is another key feature of the Sky-Watcher 10" Dobsonian. This bracket is designed to minimize diffraction spikes and reduce light loss, both of which are critical for achieving the clearest and most detailed images of objects like distant galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. This combination of a high-quality primary mirror and an optimized secondary mirror system offers excellent optical performance for a wide variety of astronomical targets.
For ease of use, the Tension Control Handle (patented, US Patent No. 6,940,642) is a standout feature that makes this telescope extremely user-friendly. This innovative design allows you to adjust the friction between the optical tube and the mount easily. Whether you want to reduce the friction for smoother movement or increase it to keep the tube steady, the tension control handle gives you precise control. This eliminates the need for cumbersome counterweights or complicated adjustments, ensuring that the telescope remains stable without sacrificing ease of movement. Whether you're adding accessories like a finderscope or simply adjusting the position of the optical tube, you’ll be able to fine-tune the friction for a seamless observing experience.
The Dobsonian mount design further enhances the telescope’s functionality. A tried-and-true favorite of amateur astronomers, the alt-azimuth mount allows for simple and smooth movement of the optical tube, both vertically (altitude) and horizontally (azimuth). This mount system is straightforward and stable, offering excellent control while tracking objects in the sky. The 2" focuser comes with a 1.25" adapter, making the telescope compatible with both larger and standard eyepieces, adding versatility for a variety of magnification options.
One of the standout benefits of this telescope is its affordability, offering exceptional value compared to other telescopes with similar performance. While it’s an excellent choice for beginners due to its ease of use and simple setup, the Sky-Watcher 10" Dobsonian also satisfies the needs of advanced and experienced astronomers who are looking for a reliable, high-performance telescope that can deliver clear, bright views of both planetary and deep-sky objects.

Celestron has reinvented the manual telescope with StarSense Explorer—the first telescope that uses your smartphone to analyze the night sky and calculate its position in real time. StarSense Explorer is ideal for beginners thanks to the app’s user-friendly interface and detailed tutorials. It’s like having your own personal tour guide of the night sky.
Dock, Launch, Explore
Leave complicated star charts, imprecise planetarium apps, and computerized mounts behind. With StarSense Explorer, locating objects has never been easier, faster, or more accurate. Within minutes of setting up the telescope, you’ll be navigating the sky with confidence. Simply place your phone in the unique StarSense dock and launch the StarSense Explorer app. After aligning your phone to the telescope’s optics (a quick, 2-minute procedure), StarSense Explorer generates a list of celestial objects currently visible. Make your selection and arrows appear onscreen, guiding you as you to move the telescope. When the object is ready to view, the bullseye turns green.
Smartphone Compatibility
StarSense Explorer works with most modern smartphones, including iPhone 6 and up and most devices running Android 7.1.2 or later manufactured since 2016. For a complete compatibility list, click here.
Patented StarSense Sky Recognition Technology
StarSense Explorer uses patented technology and your smartphone to determine exactly where the telescope is pointed in the night sky. A Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA), like the ones satellites use in orbit to correctly orient themselves, helps the app match star patterns it detects overhead to its internal database.
While other astronomy apps may claim that they can help you find objects, they rely exclusively on the phone’s gyros and accelerometers, which aren’t as accurate as LISA technology. No other app can accurately tell you when your target is visible in the eyepiece.
High Quality Altazimuth Mount with Slow Motion Control
An ultra-stable altazimuth mount provides a sturdy foundation for StarSense Explorer DX. Slip clutches and geared slow motion controls in both axes help you move the telescope smoothly and zero in your target. As celestial objects appear to drift across the night sky, you’ll be able to follow them with just a few turns of the knobs. It’s all anchored by an adjustable, full-height tripod.
Dazzling Views with High Quality Optics
With a large 102mm (4”) objective lens, this telescope has enough light gathering ability to bring out impressive detail in celestial objects. You can expect sharp, bright views of Jupiter’s four Galilean moons, its cloud bands and Great Red Spot, the rings of Saturn, the trapezium in the Orion Nebula, and beautiful Pleiades Open Star Cluster. Celestron’s XLT optical coatings improve light transmission, enhancing the views even more. The telescope also includes a 90-degree erect image diagonal, so you can use it during the day to view birds, wildlife, landscapes, and more.
Perfect for the City or Dark Sky Sites
Even if you live in a light polluted city location, StarSense Explorer is advanced enough to be able to pick out Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, the Orion Nebula, double stars, and a few more of the most famous celestial objects.
But if you can take the telescope to an even slightly darker location, more objects will become visible. With this 4” refractor and relatively dark skies, the Andromeda Galaxy, Hercules Open Star Cluster, and so many more are easily within your reach.
The entire telescope kit weighs just 14.2 pounds, so it’s perfectly portable and easy to bring on your next camping trip or to a remote observing site.
